smoke

Lots of smoke – not a whole lot of traffic. If you can tolerate the smoke you’ll likely do well out there this weekend.
A mixed bag of reports this week but overall the fishing has been consistently pretty good and improving.

The dam is fishing well with the usual suspects. Zebra midges, Tung Darts, Two-Bit Hookers, LGM’s, etc. That’s not to say you should overlook the rest of the river. We heard good reports from the canyon yesterday on down to Pelican. Try the same bugs you would use at the dam and don’t overlook the old stand-by Pheasant Tails and Hare’s Ears – there’s a reason these bugs have been around forever…..they work.

There continue to be fish being caught on various crayfish patterns and a pine squirrel leech dropped under a chubby or a Moorish Hopper can be downright deadly depending on the day.

We’ve had a few people come in and report having had some decent trico action though the consensus is that if you do happen to find fish up on Tricos you better choose your bug carefully and make that first cast count because the fish aren’t going to forgive any errors at this point. We’ve also seen a fair amount of pseudos around and the occasional callibaetis  so have those flies at the ready and don’t forget about the caddis. There are certainly dry-fly opportunities to be had right now, especially if terrestrials are your thing. Lots of bees around right now too so keep an eye on your drink (a sting to the mouth can be extremely painful) and maybe throw a bee pattern and see what happens….you never know.

Those braving the weeds and throwing streamers have been reporting some decent action. This will only get better from here on out.

Bottom line – the smoke is unpleasant but it does provide some overcast which isn’t a bad thing.  There’s a cold front moving in later today that will bring us cooler temps for the coming week but which will also be accompanied by gusty winds which won’t help with the fire situation. Look for air quality start to improve tomorrow.
