It’s been a busy week here at WCA with piles of guide trips, a good number of which were our Annual Montana Fall Extravaganza with the crew from Schultz Outfitters in Ypsilanti MI. As always, an amazing week with an awesome bunch of folks from “back home”.

We’ve been keeping a close eye on this week for some time now and as it turns out the timing couldn’t have been more perfect as the autumn transition is now fully underway. It looks, feels and smells like fall and the fishing has not disappointed.

True to their Michigan roots, most of the Schultz crew loves the streamer game which, of course, is music to our ears at Wolf Creek Angler, your Streamer Authority on the MO. It was a mixed bag of weather conditions this week, some favorable, some not ideal for dedicated stripping but regardless, we’ve been putting in the time and getting results with a bunch of big fall browns to hand. It simply doesn’t get any better than this.

Those not obsessed with sinking lines and big bugs found plenty of action on nymphs and dries and those venturing from the standard beat MO also found plenty of action at Land of the Giants and over on the Blackfoot. What a week. What a crew! We can’t wait to do it again next year.

And while a lot of our efforts were poured into this trip this week we had a bunch of other stuff going on as well. Last weekend we had the pleasure of hosting and guiding a media project with @shyonthefly and @keani_taketa and we saw a busy week in the shop with plenty of folks taking the opportunity to enjoy the short but sweet fall season on the Missouri.

Plenty of DIY this fall on the MO as well with great water conditions and solid fishing across all disciplines.

Hoppers and ants still getting plenty of eats with October Caddis adding to the big bug top water fun. Tricos still hanging on and pseudos and callibaetis rounding out the dry fly opportunities.

As always, nymphing is your numbers game with Tailwater sows, Frenchies, Purple Weight Flies, Green Machines, Zebra midges and the like all finding plenty of mouths to feed. Cray fish are still worth a try though we expect that will go away soon. In the meantime we are fully restocked on Zirdles in all flavors and tailwater sows and Frenchies in those harder to find sizes. After all, we do boast the largest selection of flies ever assembled under one roof in Wolf Creek Montana and we’re confident that if you haven’t shopped with us, when you do you’ll find our bug selection to be as good or better than any other in the canyon.

How’s our streamer selection you ask? It’s the stuff of legend. Come by and find out for yourself.

Smaller bugs getting more attention right now with Sparkle Minnows, buggers, Micro Dungeons, Thin Mints, Kreelex and Skiddish Smolts all moving plenty of fish. Don’t be afraid to go bigger but keep in mind that those bigger bugs, while they very well might attract bigger fish, also tend to attract an inordinate amount of weeds so be prepared for that.

The days are growing short so it’s time to adjust our shop hours. Beginning Monday, September 23rd we will be open from 7:30 – 5 PM daily.

Don’t miss our Annual Autumn Rod and Reel sale coming in October. In the meantime stop in for everything you need for fall fly fishing on the Missouri including The Cheapest Dam Shuttles on the MO.
