Been a while since my last O.T.R Report, been like that for a reason. Shop is kicking into high gear and honestly, I just haven’t had enough time to really get on the road to report back to everybody. However, I have been spending a good amount of time Across the Road. Pretty easy to grab the 4 weight, handful of flies for the evening hatch and a spare cold beer, cross the road and see what I can get into. Low effort, big rewards; after a long day in the shop, I’ll take it. Just to clarify, despite what you may have seen, heard or participated in, the Little Prickly Pear is closed to fishing from Labor Day to the third Saturday in May, for a reason. It’s one of the most popular spawning grounds for Rainbows and Browns alike. We’re lucky enough to have this little gem flow past the front door just a few steps away and it makes a great alternative to the MO if you’re looking it mix it up a little bit after a day floating.
Hatches on the creek follow suite with the MO for the most part. Few surprises earlier in the year as well. From the shop window I’ve watched
salmonflies fluttering above the stream, a few of which fell victim to a songbird who would show off his trophies on the fence just out front. If you’ll be passing through anytime soon PMDs and Caddis are on the menu. Paired with some terrestrials and attractors, wet or dry you really cant go wrong. Access is pretty common along the frontage road from the shop all the way to the I-15 on ramp 7 miles south of town. Look for the pull outs on the west side of the road and hunt down whatever kind of water you feel suites ya’. I will tell you this. Put some effort into getting away from the obvious accesses and the rewards can be great, especially for a creek a guy my size can stride across in three steps.
As far as me getting back on the road, the solution is on the way. The man that contributed half of my genetic makeup shows up this evening for a week, and we plan on hitting up a few different stretches of water. The old man is flexible, not physically but in respect to scheduling, a Boy Scout in a Benz. Shows up prepared for just about anything, brings good beer and buys dinner. As for my contribution, I’ll be rowing a boat, changing flies and pedaling shuttles along what will probably end up being long stretches of dusty dirt roads. Check back in sometime next week for the report. And yeah, I said Benz. The little SUV is a marvel of German engineering, tows a boat like it’s not even there and is all in all pretty kush. I foresee a lot of dirty looks over the course of the next several days. See everybody back in the shop next Thursday.
~Cheers, Chewy.
