As we bid farewell to May it looks like things are about to heat up on the Missouri. We’ll struggle to reach 60 degrees today but then it looks like the oven will be cranked up with temps in the 70’s over the next couple of days and into the high 80’s by the weekend and into next week.
This could be the start of some epic dry-fly fishing as the heat and the bugs go hand in hand. Expect lingering BWO’s this week and prepare for increased PMD and Caddis activity, especially in the lower sections of the river.
This is an awesome time of year to fish the Missouri with ample opportunities for all disciplines. Nymphing or streamer fishing during the early part of the day followed by dry fly fishing in the afternoon and evening is our usual routine but it’s always a good idea to have the dry-fly rig at the ready. Blind fishing is also an option for those who would rather watch a fly than a bobber. Try prospecting with your favorite Caddis pattern or even a terrestrial with a dropper, you might be surprised!
Missouri flows have been relatively stable in the 6700 – 7000 cfs range but it sounds like this may be it for a peak, at least for the time being. Inflows into Canyon Ferry Reservoir are decreasing from the snowmelt runoff so in order to ensure filling the reservoir to the top of the joint use pool, releases need to be decreased. Expect a drop in flows today.
We did have a couple of lodging cancellations for this week so we do have rooms available for what looks to be a gorgeous Montana weekend. These spots will likely fill by tomorrow so don’t put it off any longer – call today and book yourself a Missouri River getaway. We’ve got plenty of guides at the ready as well if you want to take the guess-work out of your trip and spend your time catching fish rather than trying to figure things out.
Want to try something different? How about a day on the Dearborn River? The window is usually short but it’s open now and we’ve got guides who would love to share this hidden gem of Montana with you.
